What emerges grows wings but it isn't a butterfly or a moth.

We collected a few late instar Cloudless Sulphur caterpillars near Ocala Florida.
Within a few days they 'J'd. Soon maggots left the pupae and pupated on the bottom of the rearing container.
I sealed the little pupae in a jar where the fly emerged.
The fly I photographed is dead.

The method of laying eggs by the tachinid fly differs according to species. Some lay their eggs on foilage of a host plant, others on the caterpillar itself, and some deposit eggs inside the caterpillar.
Some species lay larvae and deposit them on the host plant, on the caterpillar, or in the caterpillar.

Tachinid flies are considered a friend to gardeners and farmers.
They kill caterpillars of cabbage loopers as well as other garden pest moths and butterflies.
