Butterflies are shipped either via next day or second day air safely depending upon the time of year and whether the butterflies are eggs, larvae (caterpillars), pupae (chrysalises), or adult butterflies. Butterflies become fairly inactive when they are cool and/or dark. Monarchs migrate thousands of miles to the mountains in Mexico every fall. In the mountains the temperatures are above freezing yet very cool. Butterfly farmers mimic nature by providing a cool dark environment for their short journey. The Monarch Winter Roosting Grounds photos below were taken by Bill Berthet on his trip to Mexico in February 2005. |
