Botanical Name:   Passiflora foetida

Common Names:    Running Pop Passionvine

Plant type:   vine

Host for:   Gulf Fritillary Agraulis vanillae, Zebra Longwing Heliconius charithonia, Variegated Fritillary Euptoieta claudia, and Julia Dryas iulia

Zone:   8-10

Light:   Full sun to full shad

Size:    1

Water:   Average water needs, tolerates drought

Soil:   Average garden soil

Propagation:   Seed, cuttings, layering

Bloom:   Lavender with bright red seed pods

Note:   Ants are attracted to passionvine to drink from the nodes at the base of passionvine leaves. If you use a chemical on the soil underneath the plant to kill these ants, butterflies are less apt to lay eggs on the plant. The roots draw up traces of this chemical when the plant is watered. When butterflies come to lay eggs, they taste the un-natural taste of their leaves and may not lay eggs.

Butterfly Bloom Attractant:   7

Butterfly Attractant Scale:    0 - 10
10 = Excellent nectar source
8-9 = Great nectar source
6-7 = Good nectar source
5 = Fair nectar source
3-4 = Poor nectar source
1-2 = Rarely visited by butterflies
0 = We have never observed a butterfly nectaring from this flowering plant.

These ratings are offered by Shady Oak Butterfly Farm from observations in Brooker, Florida, as well as on our travels. Different species of butterflies may be attracted to different plants in different areas of the US and of the world.
